Enclaves of Longbridge

The city of Longbridge is divided into neighbourhoods called enclaves, each with its own distinct subculture and history. Each enclave is centered on top of one of the bridge’s major pillars, where there is a wider section normally known as a ‘square’, forming a central plaza from which the enclave grows.

Workhome

Guilds, workshops and residences for those who work with the products of the Bridgehand. The residents here travel daily to the Bridgehand to harvest slime, timber, fruit and other things to deliver to the rest of the city, or form into products for sale. Many renowned artisans of mycoglass and mycowood craftsmanship live and work here, where the shophouses show off their spectacular goods. It is one of the earlier enclaves despite being so far from The Middle.

New Commons

A primarily residential enclave, formed as an extension of Workhome.

Respite

A quiet, contemplative enclave where the citizens have retreated from the chaos of the more populous enclaves to pursue silence and meditation. The enclave is known for its talented musicians and sonic artists. A local meditation practice is lead every morning and evening by community volunteers.

Foundry

Foundry is a large industrial enclave dedicated to metal and stoneworking. Most of the building materials for new structures are produced or processed here. It is hot and acrid most of the time.

Conservatory

Pre-split structures hosting many greenhouses, gardens, and arboretums. In the early days after the split, this area provided the growing city with almost all of its food, before the Bridgehand was a viable source.

Union

Union is the former centre of Longbridge’s previous majority religion, The Assembly of Veil & Sky. With a variety of temples, shrines, and meditation spaces, the enclave attracts residents and visitors seeking spiritual growth and enlightenment.

The Middle

Built on the giant central pillar, The Middle widens out significantly compared to the rest of the Bridge. Home of the spectacular Keystone Fortress, which in turn houses the University, the Observatory, and the Administration Chambers. Keystone is surrounded by a huge and lush tiered garden with many public spaces. It is a popular destination for visitors from all over the bridge, whether on business or leisure.

High Commons

The earliest primarily residential enclave, it is now a commerce district of a noticeably higher wealth class, where high artisans of various crafts can be found.

The Mint

Containing the building of the same name, The Mint is the oldest and most prestigious enclave outside of The Middle. Cost of living here is very high.

New Start

Life in New Start is completely egalitarian. Resources are bartered directly with Workhome and Conservatory and made freely available to all citizens. Buildings are very densely structured, with many small, regular residences, almost exclusively commonhouses, leading to some outsiders referring to it as ‘The Hive’.

Leans

By far the longest and poorest enclave, Leans is very densely populated. Because of the crowding, many of the buildings have been built to hang over the side of the bridge, a dangerous but necessary option for some residents. Leans does not have a functioning Citizen’s Union and has the highest rate of crime on the Bridge. It is known for its vibrant Zeroth-Day parties.

Pulser's Clave

A short and recently established enclave, Pulser’s Clave is a haven for those who find the regulations on research and development of attrapulsive technologies to cramp their style. Residents are free to experiment on themselves and each other, leading to accidental discoveries and calamities in equal measure.

Far Echo

Far Echo, formerly known as Warsong, is a haunting yet fascinating uninhabited section of Longbridge about <Embed.Todo note=“120km long” />. It is littered with the remnants of an ancient battle that apparently occurred long before the split.
